Hotel Chelsea. New York City.

Junkies and pizzerias, hookers and Big Macs, winos and cheap saloons do not faze her; she has seen everything. But she has taken her stand on 23rd Street, lumpy with bay windows and gables, crowned with a tiara of chimneys, girdled with bands of stone, her great nineteenth-century bulk trimmed by the lacy calligraphy of her iron balconies. She doesn’t even seem to mind the nametag she has been forced to wear by the lords of commerce, the one that says Hotel Chelsea. It is there to anyone who has to ask her name; those who know never need to ask.
