The Ermine has a typical weasel form: a long body, short legs, a long neck supporting a triangular head, slightly protruding round ears, and long whiskers. Their pelage is reddish-brown above and creamy white below in summer and changes to utterly white in winter, with the tip of the tail remaining black in all seasons.

As the afternoon warmed up to nine degrees below zero, I felt the pull of the trail. On my way home, I spotted three spruce grouse among the spruce trees. With only my Samsung phone, I took a quick photo and left them to their peace, while I sought the comforting warmth of a hot coffee at home.

Northern Flickers are medium- to large-sized birds and are brown with black barring on their backs and black spotting on their underbellies. This species is the most recognizable in the state of Alaska. You can quickly recognize this species due to its unique white feather patterns. The underwings also tend to be yellow or red.

In his element, with eyes glaring,
The beast snorts out of his nostrils
Like a steam locomotive
All fired up, flaring!
On legs as high as my shoulders;
His front hooves paw the ground,
And the muscles flex,
Beneath the thick, dark fur coat!
His head lowers;
Displaying
A massive antler rack
(Swaying back and forth;
And the bell
Almost touching the ground)
Preparing to do battle!
–I shudder!
And look to my escape.
Then things turn for the better.
The bull moose realizes
I am not the competition
Seeking a mate,
And continues browsing
As if I weren’t there.
