João Gonçalves Zarco was the Portuguese explorer who discovered the island of Madeira in 1420. His memorial statue stands on the Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal. The sides of the marble plinth on which the statue stands are decorated with relief carvings such as the one seen here, showing a navigator holding an astrolabe.
