This is an artwork by Richard Wilson: a full-size replica of a bus hanging over the edge of the De La Warr Pavilion, a modernist Art Deco arts centre in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. It is balanced such that it rocks gently up and down in the wind.
It was inspired by the final scene in the 1969 bank heist film 'The Italian Job', where the gang's bus skids off a road in the Swiss mountains and is left dangling over the cliff edge as the film ends. The gang leader Charlie Croker (played by Michael Caine) utters the closing words - "Hang on a minute, lads, I've got a great idea!" - as he eyes the gold bars at the back end of the bus that is dangling perilously far over the precipice.

This is a detail of an artwork by Richard Wilson: a full-size replica of a bus hanging over the edge of the De La Warr Pavilion, a modernist Art Deco arts centre in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. It is balanced such that it rocks gently up and down in the wind. Here we see the rear end of the bus which hangs freely in space. Behind are the houses facing the Pavilion on the Marina road.

The De La Warr Pavilion faces the sea in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. Built in 1935 in the modernist (similar to Art Deco) style and designed by architects Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, the De La Warr Pavilion was originally used as a public entertainment hall; it is now an arts centre.
