Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire was created for Bess of Hardwick by the architect Robert Smythson in the 1590s. Bess's monogram ES appears repeatedly on the upper edge of the facade; this stands for Elizabeth Shrewsbury.

In the ruined Hardwick Old Hall in Derbyshire, England, these Elizabethan stucco fireplace decorations are still visible in the interior.

The Old Hall was Bess of Hardwick's home before the 1590s when she began building the grander New Hall (which is adjacent to the Old Hall).
