The present appearance of Petworth House dates to 1688 when the previous fortified manor house was ordered to be rebuilt by Charles Seymour, the 6th Duke of Somerset (the 'Proud Duke'), who had acquired it by marriage to Elizabeth Percy, heiress of the wealthy Northumbrian Percy family. (It underwent further changes by Anthony Salvin in the 1870s.)
