Built on the site of a 12th century Augustinian abbey, the current Baroque building dates back to 1701-4 when Sir John Harpur commissioned a complete rebuilding. It passed to the National Trust in the 1980s when the Harpur family could no longer afford the upkeep. The interior of the house is essentially just as it was when the National Trust took it over; several rooms are in a state of disrepair and contain bric-a-brac and everyday household objects.

A large stable complex is adjacent to the main house: the doors seen here open onto an enclosed courtyard, and there is another quadrangle beyond this which now houses the cafe.
