My brother, John, and I are spending a few days in and around south central New Mexico. On the way to White Sands National Monument, we decided to stop in on Bosque del Apache to see if any of the birds were close enough to photograph. We were not expecting snow, but I think it adds a contrasting background to these elegant Sand Hill Cranes.

I was about to give up on my ability to capture the sandhill cranes in flight, when the sky exploded! I've never seen such a magical sunset as this one. To boot, the cranes were still arriving to join their buddies. After this, the cold didn't seem to matter anymore...

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge is the premier site for hosting flocks of sandhill cranes and snow geese. It is located near the sleepy town of San Antonio, New Mexico.

This is a shot of the sandhill cranes wading in a shallow pool. The fiery reflection is from the most vivid sunset I've ever seen.
