Wildflowers of Station Cove always draw admirers from mid-March through the summer and fall. It is famous for the tens of thousands of Trillium cuneatum that carpet the open forest floor during mid-March thru April.

The petal color of Trillium cuneatum varies from deep, mahogany red, to purplish black, and even a yellow or yellow green form. The leaves are mottled with several shades of green.

The wildflowers above are (clockwise from top left) as follows:

Trillium cuneatum (Little Sweet Betsy), Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot - center), Trillium cuneatum (dark red and yellow green forms), Thalictrum thalictroides (Rue anemone), and Viola hastata (Halberd-leaved violet).

One of the prettiest wildflowers of Station Cove is Hepatica acutiloba commonly known as Liverwort. It has a three-lobed, green leaf which becomes dark brownish red in the fall and winter.

The flowers at Station Cove are invariably white, but rarely, a pink one can be found. This plant is usually found along streams and wet areas in more northerly states.

The falls are located in Oconee County, South Carolina, near the old trading outpost of Oconee Station.

On this day, there was a sufficient amount of water flowing over the falls to put on a good display. Pictured is the entire falls in the center, and selected closeup sections to the right and left.

This falls is approximately 60 feet tall. It is at the western end of a basic cove which supports a rich diversity of flora. As I was photographing the falls, I noticed a raven flying in and out of the cliff face to the right of the falls. Raven nesting is quite rare in South Carolina, so this was a treat, indeed.

Weekend trip to the Station Cove trail at Oconee Station in Oconee County, SC.

This is the time of year for the tens of thousands of Trillium cuneatum that blooms on the Station Cove Trail. Along with the Trillium, there are dozens of other spring ephemeral wildflowers that show up, as well. Each week will bring new colors and species. Quite a nice place to walk on a lovely spring day.
