We made a day trip to a site that we visit around this time every year: Oconee Station Falls. It is what is known as a "basic cove forest". This means that the soil has a high ph relative to other soils in the area. This accounts for some of the more unusual flora that is seen at this site.
Note: These yellow forms were once thought to be Trillium luteum, which they resemble, but the range for T. luteum does not even come near to this location.
The lighting was harsh and unforgiving, but the flowers were so nice that I had to take some shots.
This location has tons of one specific Trillium -- Trillium cuneatum or "Sweet Betsy". Odd common name, since the fragrance is that of something dead... Anyway, the flowers of this particular species of Trillium is usually a very dark maroon, but occasionally, you will find one that has yellow or yellow/green petals. And very rarely, you will find one with bronzy petals.
