It was a fantastic day in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. The target species to photograph was Three-birds orchid, and I had predicted its bloom perfectly. But, there were also other orchids and wildflowers to see.

The last major wave of bloomig for this orchid species in the mountains of North Carolina and South Carolina. About 90% of the buds on these plants at Jones Gap State Park were opening when I got there at 9:00 am. Not as many pink ones as were at my favorite site in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina yesterday, but the white ones were very nice.

Two days in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina and along the Blue Ridge Parkway in several counties of the western North Carolina mountains.

The wildflowers up there are just spectacular this summer -- especially the orange Turk's-cap Llies. My favorite haunts along the Parkway are the wet drip faces of the road-cut cliffs. Many beautiful and unusual wildflower species prefer these constantly damp/wet places.

These are some images from a long, day-trip into western North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Parkway. My friend, Alan Cressler drove over from Atlanta, Georgia, and joined me on this photography adventure.
