I just returned from a day trip (3 hours from home) to one of the best exposed granite outcrops in the Southeast -- Forty Acre Rock Heritage Preserve. It is located in Lancaster County, South Carolina.
Actually, the rock is only about 14 acres, but the Heritage Preserve covers about 2300 acres.
This preserve is the home of several endangered/threatened plant species. They are found only in an environment that provides vernal or ephemeral pools as a habitat for the plants.
I met a flickr friend, Will Stuart, who has visited the site on many occasions, but this was my first time there. I'm glad we met at a nearby location, since I probably would not have found Forty Acre Rock on my own...
