This day represents perhaps the most frustrating day of our orchid hunt in Newfoundland. First, because of witnessing the deliberate cutting of hay in a field protected by The Nature Conservancy of Canada; thus cutting thousands of fringed orchids in their prime, and second, not being sure of exactly which species we were seeing at the time. Most of the plants we were photographing were probably hybrids of either Platanthera psycodes or Platanthera grandiflora with Platanthera lacera. In a very few cases, it was rather "obvious" that we were seeing the pure species, but in most cases, we just could not be sure...

In any case, we had a glorious day photographing these beauties. Except for the days when we saw fields full of Arethusa bulbosa by the tens of thousands, we saw more orchids in bloom at these few sites than any other day on our trip...

Today would be our last day botanizing out in the field in Newfoundland. We re-visited J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park, just west of Channel Port-aux-Basques.

Here we found the elusive and rare Platanthera orbiculata var. lehorsii or Le Hors' Pad-leaved orchid.

In addition, we saw a fine stand of Spoonleaf Sundew and many hundreds of White Fringed orchids in full bloom.

This is the day we began heading north up the Trans Canada Highway. On the way, we passed the Edna's Road Bog, then headed toward J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park. Lots of bogs; lots of orchids...

Today would be a busy one for us with lots of driving. We had three stops on the agenda: Lomond River Trail, a roadside area filled with orchids, and the sleepy village of Tilt Cove on the eastern coast of Newfoundand.

These images represent two stops for the day. One at Pistolet Bay Provincial Park Campground, where we met Diane Allen and Paul Hines. They would be showing us the rare plants and wildflowers of Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve.

What a treat was in store for us!
