Day hike to Raven Cliff Falls in upstate South Carolina.

This is the orchid that I photographed two weeks ago -- just the leaf was showing and a flower spike that was just poking out of the ground. A lot can change in just a couple of weeks...

Day trip to locate Aplectrum hyemale or Puttyroot orchid also known as Adam-and-Eve orchid. I had several possible sites in mind. Also, several other wildflowers and even a few critters were found along the way...

These orchid images were taken at a relatively new site (to me) which is in Greenville County, South Carolina, near the North Carolina border. I will probably come back to this site in a week or so to catch more open flowers.

Today, Alan Cressler (from Atlanta, Georgia) and I went looking for some open flowers of Aplectrum hyemale also known as Putty-root orchid. Often, the flowers will not open fully, and they will hang downward on the stem.

I had previously seen several populations of them along Hwy. 276 in upper Greenville County, South Carolina. After making a visit to these populations about a week ago, I thought that maybe the flowers would be past perfect bloom on this visit, and some of them were. However, we did find a number of plants that apparently got a late start, because these plants were in perfect shape...
