Sorry but the date escapes me!, a class 312 EMU whisks up the snow from a recent persistant storm as it heads none stop through Kidsgrove 'out of service' . Soon after electrification in the area, 1966, these Electric Multiple Units took the occasional turn with the more usual class 304.

Shortly before the closure of Holditch Colliery, Newcastle under Lyme, a pair of BR class 25 Diesel Locomotives cross Lower Milehouse Lane accelerating their train through the manually operated gates towards the centre of Newcastle. At the junction on the western side of Liverpool Road they will perform the first of two 'run round' reversals necessary to gain access to the WCML at Madeley.

The poorer levels of train services on Sundays were very often compensated for by the overhead line power being switched off for maintenance. This produced DMUs on EMU diagrams, and what have now become known as 'drags'. Here an English Electric class 40 (EE type 4) diesel hauls a dead class 87 electric loco and it's train up the 1:80 through Bathpool Park, Kidsgrove about six miles north of Stoke on Trent. The line with it's new tunnel was opened in 1966 as a replacement for the original 1849 alignment which was deemed un-suitable for electrification owing to the tight clearences in the mile long Harecastle tunnel. The old formation ran left to right in a deep cutting masked by the trees above the train. Bathpool Park gained notoriety in the mid '70s as the scene of the murder of coach company heiress Lesley Whittle by 'The Black Panther'

Accelerating southwards away from Crewe Station under a tunnel like maze of catenary is a freshly re-painted snow plough fitted Class 37 (English Electric Type 3) belonging to West Coast Railway Co of Carnforth. The line towards Whitchurch and Shrewsbury curves away to the right.

I wouldn't usually bother to post a picture of a preserved Diesel loco because there are others far better at it than me. However this awsome spine tingling display as those two V12 Maybachs erupted deserved sharing. I think the loco was "Western Prince" but as I was totally enthralled as is thundered past me I forgot to notice! The location is Irwell Vale on the East Lancs. Rly.
