I fondly remember going into the Hotel Carlton and thinking it was one of the most beautiful buildings I had seen in Australia, inside or out. Next time I went to Brisbane, the inside had been removed and the facade is now the front of the Myer Complex on Queen St Mall in Brisbane. That is unutterably sad. If you look it up on Google, you will find that the building was listed on the Register of the National Estate, but because that listing did not protect it, the destruction was possible, and the building was de-listed. Sad, sad, sad. The facade of the Telegraph Newspaper Company is pretty good too.

This was taken in central Brisbane (next to Milton Road) at about 1pm during the dust storm.

This seems to be the building that you can find on Google as the New York Hotel. It is now part of the facade of the Myer Centre on Queen St Mall. This tile work is very striking, and the photo also illustrates the conservation problems--the trees growing in the mortar between the tiles will cause the destruction of the whole striking feature if something is not done about them.

The third great heritage front on lower Queen St. In this picture you can also see the brown Brisbane River, far below its flood level, but just a full of sediment in February 2011.

The bit you do not normally see: the air conditioning plants on the roofs of the Heritage Buildings that were bastardised to create the Myer Centre. But all buildings in the modern city have these gargantuan, but strangely elegant creations.
