This was the passage by which livestock came off steamers (mostly belonging to MacBrayne's) from the islands up to the level of the pier and the railway station. Another relic of Kyle's past as a maritime transport hub (rather like Oban is today). Livestock no longer disembarks at Kyle but lately there has been something of a resurgence of different freight with wind turbines for windfarms on Skye being unloaded at Kyle and cargos of logs from nearby plantations being loaded on to ships for onward transport south.
There really should be a heritage trail round Kyle.

The mountains of Skye as viewed from the Plock of Kyle.
A wonderful photo opportunity let down by my indifferent photography skills and pushing my compact camera beyond its limits in poor light resulting in a very grainy image. Best viewed small!
