Van alle acht stadspoorten van Leiden zijn er uiteindelijk twee overgebleven: de Morspoort en de Zijlpoort. De Morspoort diende vroeger als de westelijke stadspoort van de stad Leiden. In 1611 was er al sprake van een Morspoort, echter was deze niet van steen maar van hout en dus niet voor langere tijd te gebruiken. Uiteindelijk werd in 1669 door het stadsbestuur de beslissing genomen de houten poort te vervangen voor een stenen stadspoort, voor dit project werd de stadsarchitect Willem Leendertsz. van der Helm (1628-1675) ingehuurd.
