Story Theatre-Grand Opera House, 512 Broad Street, Story City, Iowa. Built in 1913, the Story Theatre-Grand Opera House featured vaudeville and silent movies until the stage shows were phased out in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Movies dominated the theatre from then on, alongside school graduations and plays. The theatre’s stage was closed in the 1940s, but resurrected in 1988 for the theatre’s 75th anniversary. Now the stage is used a few times a year by the local theatrical troupe and since the 1970s movies are shown Friday-Sunday only. The theatre has earned the distinction of being the oldest continually running theatre in Iowa.
The Story Theatre-Grand Opera House is part of the Grand Hotel block, named for the recently refurbished hotel which has become home to offices for the local city government. The theatre and hotel block are on the National Register of Historic Places.
