Back view of the Hotel De Anza on 233 West Santa Clara Street in San Jose. This is THE place to stay in downtown San Jose, unless you're staying somewhere else.

Sign for Kerley's at 20301 Stevens Creek Boulevard in Santa Clara, CA. Yes, that looks like a fishing pole on the left side of the sign, or perhaps a covert antenna. After I took this picture I got into my car, and as I pulled away I noticed someone from the store chasing after me, then writing down my license plate number. Is sign photography illegal? Isn't the whole point of a sign to have it get noticed? They should be flattered, not paranoid!

Sign for the Loree Shopping Center on Stevens Creek Boulevard in Santa Clara, CA. Love the arrow...just in case you're unclear in which direction the strip mall lies.

An old formerly neon sign atop the Loree Shopping Center on Stevens Creek Boulevard in Santa Clara, CA. Looks like this sign hasn't been functional in years. Like many of us, the Loree Shopping Center has seen better days, my friend.

Update 2010: This sign has been torn down and is no more.

The South Seas Hideaway was a bar on the east side of the Loree Shopping Center on Stevens Creek Boulevard in Santa Clara (10031 Judy Avenue)...or maybe it's Cupertino (it's right on the border). Regardless, the bar closed and they took down the hand-painted sign with palm trees on it. Theoretically the bar could be just living up to its name and hiding away behind the plywood, but somehow I don't think so. I hope the owners were able to retire to Tahiti.
