Ever since the days of this city being the capital of the Byzantine Empire, it has been the seat of the Patriarch of the Orthodox church, the status equivalent to Rome for Catholics. Even though after the Turkish conquest the Orthodox churches have become largely independent, the Patriarch still retains a degree of influence and prestige. His palace is located in the formerly Greek neighborhood of Phanar.
