The moat runs around the entire castle/mansion and the entrance is the bridge. The renaissance castle/mansion was expanded and completed in 1588, on behalf of Ingeborg Skeel. The sandstone portal was a gift from King Frederick II and originally created for Frederiksborg Castle.

Today the castle/mansion is open to the public and houses a significant art collection.

The Östad estate was first written about in the year 1400. It was bought by Niclas Sahlgren (1701–1776), director of the Swedish East India Company. The Östad foundation was established in 1774 through a donation by Sahlgren. Niclas Sahlgren´s daughter Sara Catharina married in 1782 Claes Alströmer (1736–1794), son of Jonas Alströmer (1685–1761). Since then the foundation for seven generations have been led by the family Alströmer.
From 1774 to 1945 the foundation operated a children's house to "save poor parents´ children and make them faithful workers in agriculture". Between 1946 and 1988 there was a forest school on the estate that trained forest guards, loggers and machine drivers.
