I resolved today to photograph a lichen. And here it is. A short walk down Snake Alley on the way to town and the Lumix was already being called into action. Poor light and no tripod but I was rather pleased at the design. It reminds me of Australia as seen from below. Flip it over and you may see what I see. Or you may not. BTW I have never seen a snake in Snake Alley but there are reliable reports of Bamboo pit vipers. My guess however is that they are probably all tucked up in bed watching Steve Irwin repeats on TV. Much too cold for any self-respecting serpent to be out and about.

I thought this orange organism was a lichen but the only orange one seemingly found in HK is Caloplaca (cinnabarina?) and that grows only on rocks it seems. Even I can tell the difference between bark and rock. A little more trawling in HK LIchens (S.L.Thrower, 1988) suggested this is more likely to be an alga, which partners lichens such as the Graphid species. So now I need to work out what the green graphid is next to it :-(
My copy of HK LIchens is on loan from Roger Kendrick whilst I try to find a copy second hand at a sensible price. Thanks Roger.
