The Lincoln Continental from 1961 stands as one of the great luxury car designs of the 20th century.
The 1961 Continental helped erase the previous three years of Lincoln models, the Mk III, MkIV and MkV.
Lincoln had suffered during this period, and to make this project pay, the Lincoln was paired during development with the 1961 Thunderbird, a model sold at higher volume. Both designs are classics, and provide a visual benchmark for future generations.
On distinctive feature of the Continental was the rear suicide doors - required to aid passengers to enter the rear of the car. Another distinctive styling feature was the strong shoulder line, rimmed in chromed aluminium trim, running from nose to tail. One technology enabling this bold styling, was the first application of curved side glass.
A 1960s era Continental was featured in the 2000 hit film, 'The Matrix'.
