What a delightfully playable set 4433 is. Suprisingly, no one else had built this yet for the challenge, seeing as it is the reference set in the design brief. One of the new sets for 2012, the model features an off-roader, trailer and two off-road dirt bikes. For this miniland recreation the offroader is modelled as the current Landrover Discovery 4. The dirt bikes are designed to mimic the original Lego assembly.

The Landrover features a heavily modified form of the chassis framing from the 5581 Model Team Van set. In this case, the steering rack has been transferred to in front of the front axle. This allows for the package of Vee-engines over the front axle line, with a rearward weight bias. In this case a Vee-four, mimicing the package layout of the 5.0 litre Vee-eight in the real car. The steering shaft passes though the top of the engine, through the open valley between the engine blocks. Suprisingly, even with the 7-stud engine width, the steering achieves an angle of 32 degrees.

The rear axle has been ditched in favour of a more sophisticated Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) module., This frees up package space and better controls the rear wheel motion. The Landrover body features four opening doors (the rears feature the overfenders). Opening clamshell engine compartment provides access to the engine and steering systems, and the split opening, asymetric tailgates allow access to the luggage area.

The dirt bikes are also built at miniland scale. At this point I would like to note that it would be really great to have a better wheel/tyre combination for this type of vehicle. A Wheel OD of 26-28 mm, wheel width at bead and ale of 8mm, and a variety of tyres from 36-40 mm OD, depending on profile (street/racer bike, dirt bike). A through technic cross axle, and clip on 'features (such as brake discs, wheel trims would also be great. A version for cars with the same OD dimensions but with a 16m section width, or combining two motorcycle wheels with a unique 16mm car tyre would also be acceptable. - but I digress. Call me if you want some help designing it.

The trailer is a simple two axle trailer, fitted with tool boxes and marker cones.
