Twenty years before the appearance of the BMW E30 3-Series, the true template for BMW was revealed in the form of the BMW 1500 or Neuer Class (New class).

The BMW 1500 targeted the increasing group of newly-affluent German middle class citizens as the nation recovered from the second World War. BMW had hitherto been the purveyor of high-class machinery in low volumes (502, 503, 507, 508) or mid-volume semi-cars in the form of the Isetta 3-wheeler. BMW had made an earlier foray in to the standard family car with the 700, a rear engined small-capacity vehicle not disimilar to the VW Type-3. The BMW 1500, however, set the template of front-engine, RWD, 3-box saloon of 60 - 120 bhp. The initial showing of the 1500 in 1961 succeeded in obtaining enough pre-order payments to not only tool the car, but to help with BMW's debt issues and to keep the company afloat. Early production issues limited volume at first, but as these were ironed out, production increased, along with sales. Further derivations of engine capacity (1800, 2000) broadened the appeal, and the car was soon joined by a volume 2-door sedan variant - the popular '02' series in 1966.

The BMW 1500 was joined by the E3 'New Six' six cylinder car in 1968, featuring six-cylinder engine of 2500cc capacity and above, along wih the E9 Coupe derivatives. The 1500 class car was later replaced in 1972 by the E12 5-Series.

This Lego model BMW 1500 has been modeled in Lego Digital Designer for Flickr LUGNuts 43rd build challenge - "Plus or Mins Ten" - featuring vehicles made ten years before or after the birth year of the model builder. In this car, the 1962 New Class BMW 1500.
