One of the most popular Lego cars on Brickshelf, the AE86 derivatives of the 5th Generation Toyota Corolla are an enduring favourite.

Although commonly refered to by the numeric variant code AE86, the cars were badged variously as Corollas, Sprinters Levin and Truenos during production.

Truenos are commonly identified by their retractable headlight noses, whilts Levins and Sprinters are more closely aligned visually with the concurrent front-wheel-drive 5th generation Corolla hatchbacks and sedans.

One common reason for the enduring popularity of these compact cars was that they were one of the last cars in their class (C-segment small cars) to retain rear-wheel-drive. Coupled with the strong 4-cylinder engines, particularly the 4AGE, shared with the Toyota MR2 sports car.

These cars are now regaining popularity in the fringe motorsport of 'Drifting'.

Illustrated here is a white standard Levin liftback, many cars were delivered trimmed in this way.

The blue car is a modified Levin, lowered suspension and flared wheel-arches.

The red car is a Trueno with th retractable head lamps.

These Lego cars have been modelled in Lego Digital Designer for Flickr LUGNuts 35th build challenge - Big in Japan, celebrating cars, bikes and trucks from Japanese auto manufacturers.
