Ford Australia's AU Falcon. Designed to the then-current 'New Edge' design theme. The Falcon was styled to a much more modern form than the traditional Australian Family Car.
Unfortunately this did not sit well with their traditional customers who were uncomfortable with this radical move. Fleet customers were also turned off by the unfortunate styling themes applied to the base 'Forte' model. The commonly white car was fitted with an odd , grey waterfall grille. Combined with small wheels, and a high ride height, the 'look' was described as 'droopy-tailed' and ;tippy-toed' at the same time. During the period this AU Falcon was on sale, Ford saw its market share drop substantially, and fall from Number 1 in the market to Number 3.
Perhaps to be expected, the car was much more palatable in the higher trim levels, particularly the 'Ghia' trim. When thus equipped, and in a more subdued, luxurious colour such as maroon, dark blue, charcoal or dark green, the car is quite acceptable.
More strangely still, is that the car looks better today, than when it was launched 13 years ago. Maybe the designers were right - it was ahead of its time. But the market made its decision nonetheless - this car was considered a lemon.
Built for LUGNuts March 2010 Challenge - Lemons or LeMans, the AU Falcon was the design no-one wanted from a on-vehilce manufacturer, and almost shut down the Australian arm of the Blue Oval.
