German auto manufacturer NSU was an early experimenter with the Wankel rotary engine. First installed in the NSU Prinz (a small mid engined roadster), NSU later released the saloon Ro80. Considered ahead of its time in styling, packaging, aerodynamics, and the engine.
Unfortunately, the car failed to meet a key criteria of automotive requirements, that is, to proceed.
Later developments by NSU and Mazda largely cured the central ill - that or rotor tip wear, but it was to no avail. The warranty costs associated with the expensive engine failures and damage to NSU's reputation caused the company to be taken over by the VW group.
Anecdotal stories talk of drivers waving to each other as the passed on the road. The number of fingers that they waved indicating the number of replacement engines that they have had fitted.
For this reason, unfortunately, I have built this Lego car for LUGNuts March 2010 Challenge Lemons and LeMans, as an example of sometimes biting off more than you can chew.
NSU Ro80, LUGNuts Lemon of the month.
