Robinson was a politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1734 and was a Governor of Barbados. He was an architect, collector and an extravagant character, whose life was the inspiration for numerous anecdotes.

Robinson was forced in 1769 to dispose of the Rokeby Park estate, which had been in the possession of his family since 1610, to John Sawrey Morritt, the father of John Bacon Sawrey Morritt. The Morritts are still here.
