This stone was laid as a memorial of the centenary of St James' Church, Slaithwaite by the Right Honourable William Walter, Fifth Earl of Dartmouth. September 6th 1890.

Grave of Rev Robert Meeke - d1724.

He founded and endowed the free school in 1721 to provide instruction in reading, writing and arithmetic for ten scholars, two each fron Golcar, Lingards, Linthwaite and four from Slaithwaite.
