Minster Church of St Peter & St Paul, Howden, East Yorkshire.
A Collegiate church including the attached Grammar School and Chapter House.
Begun c1270-75 with the transepts. The nave finished c1300 with the west front completed 1306-11. The choir, also often referred to as the chancel, completed 1320-40. The chapter house begun 1340-49, and recommenced after a long intermission in 1380, with the addition in the early C15 of a ground-floor chapel or vestry and its vestibule, two chambers above and an access stair. The tower begun late C14, with its upper stage of late C15. The attached Grammar School c1500. All restored mid C19.
Grade l listed.
The tower was originally a Lantern Tower. It was begun by Bishop Skirlaw of Durham and the topmost section added in the late 15th century. It houses a peal of 8 bells recast after the Great Fire of 1929.
When Collegiate churches were abolished in 1548, the rectorial revenues went to the Crown. Elizabeth l granted them to the local gentry, who refused to finance church repairs. The Choir was abandoned as a place of worship in 1609.
In 1644 or during the Civil War, the Parliamentarians stabled their horses in the North Transept and in the Choir. Tombs, monuments and brasses were damaged and the new organ was destroyed. In 1690 the Choir roof collapsed and the Chapter House roof in 1750.

Medieval base, cross of 1909 carved by TS Ullathorne of Selby.
This cross was erected and presented to the town of Howden by Jane, widow of Thomas Sinclair Clarke Esq of Knedlington Manor, May 27, 1909.
