Obelisk Memorial to Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885), 1885.
Designed by Julius Alfred Chatwin (1830-1907).
Built by Robert Bridgeman.
Colonel Burnaby was killed in the Sudan.
Grade ll listed.
Fred Burnaby was a Victorian celebrity: soldier, journalist, adventurer and balloonist. He was a founder member of the Primrose League, whose aim was to gain the support of the people for Conservative principles. He died in the Sudan fighting for General Gordon. He was not commemorated in London because, it is thought, his political remarks had offended the Prince of Wales and his circle. However, he had won solid support in Birmingham when he stood for Parliament in 1880, losing to Bright and Chamberlain. His memorial, an obelisk of Portland Stone, was unveiled by his friend and comrade Captain Charles Beresford RN on the 11th November 1885.
