The Calder & Hebble Navigation came to Brighouse in 1760, and the canal basin was opened in 1768. The Calder & Hebble Navigation runs for 21 miles from the Aire & Calder Navigation at Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge. It was one of the first navigable waterways into the Pennines and was an extension westwards of the Aire & Calder Navigation. It was surveyed by John Smeaton, with the later sections by James Brindley.

This roving bridge, with a cobbled spiral ramp on each side, enabled horses to cross without being detached from their tow ropes.
