Cathedral Church of St Michael, Coventry.
Grade l listed.
A view from Bayley Lane looking west.
Built out of local sandstone in the 13th & 14th centuries, the parish church of St. Michael in Coventry was a masterpiece of medieval building. There were tall slender pillars which supported a carved oak roof, a host of beautiful stained glass windows and a carved wooden pulpit, of which only the steps now remain. On the 14th November 1940, the old cathedral was bombed, leaving just the spire, towering above the ruins. Instead of rebuilding the cathedral, it was decided that it should be left to symbolise destruction and remembrance.
The ruined cathedral Church of St Michael dates from 1300 AD. One of the largest parish churches in England, built originally for the Earl's half of Coventry, it became the cathedral of the Diocese of Coventry in 1918. The magnificent west tower and spire built 1374-1450 is 295 feet (90 metres) high. It dominates the city centre and survived the air raid of 14 November 1940 which destroyed the remainder of the church.
