Western New Town.
The design for St Mary's was chosen by limited competition involving six architectural practices. The money for the commission was a bequest of the Walker Sisters (heirs of Sir Patrick Walker on whose land the nearby Walker Estate was developed) on the condition that it be used to build a cathedral. Scott won the competition with a design that originally included only a single tower, and was later amended to include the two west towers in 1874. Work began on site in 1874 and all apart from the west towers and chapter house was complete by 1879 at a cost to that date of £110,000. The chapter house was completed in 1890-91 by John Oldrid Scott (Sir GG Scott's son) and the west towers in 1913-17 by Charles Marriott Oldrid Scott (JO Scott's son), both to the original designs

Looking East.
George Gilbert Scott designed the Cathedral so that the high altar was the centrepiece of attention the moment one enters the Cathedral. The intricate reredos behind the High Altar was designed by J Oldrid Scott. It frames a marble relief of the scene around the Cross at Calvary, and is flanked by smaller figures of St. Columba and St. Margaret, saints important in the development of Christianity in medieval Scotland. The sculptor was Mary Grant of Kilgraston, near Perth, who had worked with Scott on the restoration of Lichfield Cathedral.
