Bethel Chapel (former), Knapp Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Grade ll listed.
The Bethel Chapel was built in 1820-21 to replace a smaller chapel of 1701-02 on the same site.
A Baptist chapel built in 1701 the original building was only 38 x 20 ft. It was demolished in 1819 when numbers had dwindled and the building needed extensive repairs. It was rebuilt a year later.
Again, with shrinking numbers and no pastor it was closed as a Baptist Chapel in 1951. The Mormons took it over and used it up until 1965 when again it was taken over, this time by the Christadelphians.
Ian and Christine James bought it in a poor state and spent months restoring it, maintaining some of the original features – the windows and the timber ceiling – and adding a lift, underfloor heating and glass and steel to the galleried area.
Chapel Arts opened in 2017 as a unique venue for the arts – live music, regular workshops, music masterclasses, art exhibitions and drama.
