Cotton Queens of the 1930s.
Between 1930 and 1939 a major event in the cotton towns of Lancashire was of the annual Cotton Queen competition. It was organised by the Daily Dispatch newspaper and sponsored by the cotton industry, as the aim was to promote cotton during the economic depression of the 1930s.
Towns across the North West would elect a local Cotton Queen. To be eligible for the competition, women had to be actively working in the textile industry. Winners of the local competitions then went to Blackpool for a few days and the national queen was chosen in a ceremony at the Tower Ballroom.
