To be sure, "girl," "woman," and "female" were always desired as well. But, in my eyes, a Lady was something special: A dignified, well-mannered, cultured woman; a polite woman of refinement and gentle manners.

I understand that in recent decades the term "lady" has been looked down upon in some circles as being outdated and patronizing. Perhaps that is true. I do not see it that way. I use the word with the utmost respect and admiration.

And, if nothing else, that is exactly how I would love to be perceived--as a Lady.
