The Battle of Evesham (1265) was the main event of the festival, with around 750 re-enactors taking part. Simon de Montfort was losing support and was confronted by a much larger army led by Edward, Prince of Wales. De Montfort's army was defeated and he was killed. Henry III returned to the throne where he reigned until 1272 when he was succeeded by his son, Edward I.

Evesham Medieval Festival was another exciting re-enactment, visited with our grandson last weekend. On the Sunday, two battles were re-enacted - the first was the Battle of Lewes (1264) where Simon de Montfort and his rebel barons fought against Henry III. De Montford's side won, Henry and his son Edward were captured.

The shot above is Simon de Montfort (on the white horse) and the rebel barons. De Montford's horse "King" is apparently famous in re-enactment circles and we also saw him last month at Tewkesbury. The shot below is a clash in the Battle of Lewes. The rider on the right of the image is Edward, Prince of Wales (who became Edward I).

The two Edwards - Edward, Prince of Wales, and Edward IV - confront each other in the battle. The Prince of Wales was killed and Edward IV remained king until his death in 1483. I believe the blood on the Prince of Wales face isn't real but it is believed he was scarred in the battle. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to keep out the rope from this shot from where we were sitting and it did spoil some of my shots.
Another shot in the comment below of the victorious Edward IV.

Last weekend we visited Tewkesbury Medieval Festival and battle re-enactment with our grandson for the second time. The event was as spectacular as ever - and this time with no rain! There were somewhere in the region of 2000 traders, entertainers and re-enactors taking part, including some from other countries.
These were some of the re-enactors as they marched onto the battlefield. This is Margaret of Anjou, the wife of the overthrown King Henry VI with her son Edward, Prince of Wales, heading to confront Edward IV who had seized the throne. A couple more shots in the comment below.
