Enlisted and appointed First Lieutenant Co. K 17th Virginia, Warrenton Rifles under Captain John Quincy Marr.
Captian Marr was killed at Fairfax Courthouse on June 1st, 1861, becoming the first Confederate officer killed in action in the war. Afterwards Captain Shackleford commanded Company K, Warrenton Rifles until discharged on account of wounds received at Blackburn's Ford July 18, 1861.
After the war B.H. Shackleford opened a law office in Warrenton Virginia.
He died while campaigning for Congress on May 18, 1870.
