The woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) here in B.C. look a bit different from the barren ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) of interior Alaska, it was immediately apparent to us. A richer sable brown. This time of year these young bulls' coats are at their summer best, and they are developing velvet-covered antlers.
Like their cousins of interior Alaska, they do own the road and everyone respects their indigenous birthright.
