My father received a travel pass after he was released from Buchenwald on the condition that he and my mother leave the country immediately. His head was shaved in the concentration camp.
It is interesting to note that under his picture his middle name is indicated as "Israel". All Jews were given this name.

My parents met in Frankfurt. Both of their families had to leave their villages because of increased antisemitism. In the city life was easier because they had a degree of anonymity.

Before the rise of Hitler there was very little antisemitism in Germany relatively speaking. My mother told me she had a very good relationship with all the neighbors in the tiny town she grew up in about 25 miles outside of Frankfurt. I've been there and saw the house where her family lived.

My mother embarked for England on July 18, 1939. World War II began 44 days later. This visa was issued on July 5, 1939 by the British Vice Consul in Frankfort. This would not have been possible after the war started. My mother was extremely lucky.
