Passeggiando per le vie di San Gimignano sembra davvero di essere ritornati indietro al medioevo, quando la città era dominata da alte torri costruite dai nobili locali per affermare la loro supremazia.
La torre più alta è la Torre Grossa, visibile sullo sfondo: dall’alto dei suoi 54mt si gode di un bellissimo panorama su San Gimignano e su tutte le colline circostanti.
La foto è stata scattata dalla via principale di San Gimignano, Via San Giovanni: è insolitamente larga per essere una strada di paese, difatti essa costituisce il tratto urbano meridionale dell’antica Via Francigena, la più famosa delle strade romee medioevali che portavano i pellegrini dal Nord Europa a Roma.

If you walk in San Gimignano (Tuscany, Italy), you can really imagine to be back in the Middle Age, when the village was dominated by high towers built by the local lords to show their social status.
The tallest tower is the “Torre Grossa”, visible on the background: from its top (54m of height) it is possible to see a beautiful sight of San Gimignano and the surrounding hills.
This shot was taken in the main road of the village, Via San Giovanni: it is unusually large because it is the southern urban part of the ancient “Via Francigena”, the most famous of the roads that during the middle ages the pilgrims travelled over for going from the Northern Europe to Rome.
