L’Abbazia di San Galgano, in stile gotico cistercense, sorge in Toscana nella pianura dell’alta Valdimerse, in provincia di Siena.
La costruzione della grande chiesa abbaziale iniziò nel 1218 e la consacrazione avvenne nel 1288.
Nel XVI sec. iniziarono i primi cedimenti strutturali della chiesa abbaziale, nel 1781 crollò quello che rimaneva delle volte e nel 1786 crollò il campanile. La chiesa venne infine sconsacrata nel 1789.
Solo alla fine dell’800 l’interesse verso il monumento riprese e all’inizio del ‘900 venne condotto un restauro conservativo per consolidare quanto era rimasto della struttura originaria....tranne il tetto!

The Abbey of San Galgano, in Cistercian Gothic style, is located in Tuscany in the plain of upper Valdimerse, in the province of Siena town (Italy)
The construction of the large abbey church began in 1218 and the consecration took place in 1288.
In the 16th century the first structural failures of the abbey church began, in 1781 what remained of the vaults collapsed and in 1786 the bell tower collapsed. The church was finally deconsecrated in 1789.
Only at the end of the 19th century did interest in the monument resume and at the beginning of the 20th century a conservative restoration was carried out to consolidate what was left of the original structure... except the roof
