San Gimignano (Siena) è soprattutto famosa per le torri medievali che ancora svettano sul suo panorama.
Delle 72 tra torri e case-torri, esistenti nel periodo d'oro del Comune (metà del Duecento), ne restavano venticinque nel 1580 ed oggi ne restano quattordici ufficiali, mentre altre cimate sono intravedibili nel tessuto urbano.
La più antica è la Torre del Podestà, detta la Rognosa, che è alta 51 metri, mentre la più alta è la Torre Grossa, di 54 metri.

San Gimignano (Tuscany, Italy) is famous mainly for the middle-ages towers which still today stand out on the landscape.
In the golden age of the town (middle of the 1200), 72 towers were present, but in 1580 only 25 of them were left; today only 14 towers are kept, while many others were cut on the top part but they are still visible in the town.
The oldest tower is the “Torre del Podestà” (also called “La Rognosa”), which is 51 mt tall, while instead the tallest one is the “Torre Grossa” (54 mt tall).
