"Do you know where you're going?" ... "No not really, but we're headed northwest and west so we'll run into Yreka at some point."
"Whoa! See, aren't you glad we came this way? I'll just be a few minutes."
Taken in Little Shasta, California.
That's Mt. Shasta in the background.

One of the marble Angels atop a family tomb in Colma, California.
They watch you in wonder as you approach.
With most of Colma's land dedicated to cemeteries, the population of the dead outnumber the living by over a thousand to one. This has led to it being called, "the city of the silent," and also has given rise to a humorous motto, now recorded on the city's website: "It's great to be alive in Colma."

The Kennedy Mine is famous for being one of the deepest gold mines in the world at 5912 feet. Prospected in 1860, reorganized in 1886 and continuously run until 1942, the Kennedy Gold Mine produced approximately $34,280,000 in gold according to the CA Dept. of Conservation. One of the tallest head frames in existence today can be seen at the Kennedy Mine. The mine also had one of the largest stamp mills in the Mother Lode, moving tailings by means of huge wooden wheels, some of which are still standing.
Taken in Jackson, California.

I added some texture to add interest to a flat white sky.

One of the things I wanted to do on a recent road trip was to stop in Colma, California and visit a couple of the cemeteries there.
I wasn't disappointed and could have spent more time wandering around. I guess we'll have to return someday, there was a lot to see.
