The Harton Railway was a colliery line which threaded its way around and beneath the town of South Shields, on the south bank of the River Tyne. Its purpose was to connect Westoe Colliery with staithes on the River Tyne and various other colliery yards and interchange points around the town.
It was particularly interesting as it was worked by a variety of overhead wire electric locos, some 4-wheeled, some Bo-Bo wheel arrangement. I believe it closed in July 1989. Several locos still exist at the Tanfield Railway though I am not aware of the condition that they are currently in.
