In June 1991, Mt. Pinatubo erupted. Huge areas were covered with its ashes partially with several meters. Seven years later, in 1998, erosion had quickly formed this new landscape.

Surrounding areas were severely damaged by pyroclastic surges, pyroclastic falls, and subsequently, by the flooding lahars caused by rainwater re-mobilizing earlier volcanic deposits. This caused extensive destruction to infrastructure and changed river systems for years after the eruption,
