Comillas is a Spanish town, located in the region of Cantabria, 50 km from Santander.

SOBRELLANO PALACE

The Sobrellano Palace, built for the Marquis of Comillas, has a neo-Gothic style with several areas decorated with Modernista sculptures and beautiful paintings.
Antonio López y López, the first Marquis of Comillas, was born into a humble local family. Although he was orphaned at an early age, he is the epitome of a self-made man. In 1853, at the age of 36, he returned from Cuba with a considerable fortune. His company was established in Barcelona.
His Sobrellano palace was designed as a summer residence for the Marquis and the Spanish Royal Family. Work began in 1882 and it was inaugurated several years after the death of the 1st Marquis.
